Courtyard Extension, Hindhead, Surrey
The brief, to provide energy improvements for the whole house to lower energy bills and to adapt the existing top-heavy layout for modern modes of living.
Located in Hindhead, Surrey, this three-storey period property originally had a dark and impractical ground floor layout. It had also lost much of its southerly garden to several rear extensions. An unsightly pre-cast concrete garage, a shed and canopies also cluttered the side garden.
The client’s vision permitted the demolition of all existing extensions and outbuildings. This allowed for the siting of a new extension alongside the existing property and the re-orientation towards the southerly garden.
Our design provides a new kitchen-dining, family room, study, utility and cloakroom housed in a courtyard layout that takes in the views of an existing mature tree and the re-established garden. The property’s existing, generous floor to ceiling heights have been mirrored by the new full-height windows and doors that form an enclosed arcade.
For practicality, the extension provides a new secondary hallway, lined with full-height, built-in storage seamlessly integrated.
The new focal point of the house is the open-plan kitchen and dining room. It is isolated in the southerly wing of the extension with bi-fold doors and a vaulted ceiling under a zinc butterfly roof.
The transition between the new and existing hallway features renovated floorboards and a built-in bookcases framing the courtyard views and expel any memories of the former dark and unloved interiors.
