Extension and Reconfiguration, Haslemere, Surrey
The brief, to remodel and extend the property to provide modern living accommodation over three floors whilst maintaining the existing historic character of the building.
Located in the heart of Haslemere, Surrey, this property is an Arts & Crafts house which has remained largely unchanged since its construction in the 19th Century, with living accommodation split over three floors making it disjointed and difficult to live in. The kitchen in particular was located on the ground floor with no connection to the upper floor dining and main garden.
Our design delivers a single storey side extension to remodel all living accommodation on the upper garden level, housing an open-plan kitchen/dining space set within the mature gardens and linked to the historic, oak panelled living room.
Conceived as a new garden pavilion, the extension is set behind an existing two storey feature garden wall, minimising the impact on the existing building approach with only the small Arts & Crafts inspired, Crittall glazed link visible at the street frontage. The new accommodation freed up the lower floor to be remodelled with two good size double bedrooms, a new utility and bathroom. Our redesign also reconfigured a secondary garden entrance to become part of the upper floor garden layout, with a generously sized new hall and cloak room and a new, Arts & Crafts inspired wood panelled front door.
